Vista, CA–San Diego County Sheriff’s officials are investigating the death of 46-year-old James Pittman, an incarcerated individual who passed away Thursday morning at Palomar Medical Center Escondido.
On February 14, deputies at the Vista Detention Facility were alerted to Pittman’s need for medical assistance when his cellmate found him in distress. Initially appearing disoriented and confused, Pittman was evaluated by deputies and transported to the facility’s medical clinic. Paramedics from the Vista Fire Department later transferred him to Palomar Medical Center Escondido for further care.
Following a medical procedure, Pittman was admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, where he remained under treatment until his death on February 27. His family was kept informed of his condition throughout his hospitalization.
An autopsy performed by the Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to determine a preliminary cause and manner of death, with an investigation still ongoing. As part of a standard protocol for in-custody deaths, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit has launched an investigation. Additionally, the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board has been notified.
Pittman had been in custody since January 3, 2023, on a murder charge. At the time of his arrest, he was a resident of Oceanside.
A Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support Pittman’s family as they navigate this difficult time.
Authorities stated that additional updates will be provided as the investigation continues and further details emerge.
