San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a man’s death while in San Diego Police custody following a family altercation in City Heights on Sunday, authorities said.

On October 9, just after 10 p.m., officers with the San Diego Police Department were dispatched to a family disturbance in the 3100 block of 39th Street in City Heights.

When officers arrived, family members were restraining 23-year-old Denny Jalate on the ground outside of their residence. Officers placed Jalate in handcuffs without incident. Shortly after being detained, Officers noticed the man was in medical distress. They began life-saving measures and called for paramedics. He was transported to a local area hospital for treatment. While at the hospital and despite hospital staff efforts, Jalate’s health declined, and was pronounced dead. No other family members were injured during the incident.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is investigating the case.
