CHULA VISTA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the suspicious death of a Chula Vista city employee found dead at his home in the unincorporated area of La Mesa Tuesday afternoon.
The Medical Examiner’s Office conducted the autopsy Wednesday and has identified the victim as Kevin Powell, a 38-year-old resident of unincorporated La Mesa. The victim’s family has been notified of his death. The preliminary cause of death is being withheld for investigative reasons. The manner of death is homicide.
On August 11, an employee of the city of Chula Vista missed scheduled morning meetings and his supervisor became concerned.
Two sergeants with the Chula Vista Police Department went to the employee’s home in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in the unincorporated area of La Mesa to check on his welfare. Just after 1 p.m., the sergeants found a deceased male inside the home who appeared to be the employee.
Due to the nature of the circumstances and the deceased being in the unincorporated area of San Diego county, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
