San DIEGO, CA–Sheriff’s Department detectives are investigating the death of an inmate at the San Diego Central Jail in downtown San Diego.

On May 30, at about 4 p.m., deputies at the jail found 35-year-old Lester Daniel Marroquin unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed lifesaving measures until fire department personnel arrived at the facility. Marroquin was pronounced dead at the facility, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Marroquin was booked into custody by the San Diego Police Department on December 18, 2020, and was in custody for the charges of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of battery with serious bodily injury, obstruct and resist executive officer, and vandalism less than $400.

Marroquin was in a cell by himself and no evidence of foul play was discovered, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The Medical Examiner’s Office scheduled Marroquin’s autopsy. The victim’s family has been notified of his death.
