SAN DIEGO–The City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture Monday announced awards to 147 nonprofit organizations for fiscal year 2019 totaling $11.4 million.
“The organizations awarded contracts represent the incredible diversity of arts and culture resources we are blessed with in San Diego,” said Commission Chair Janet Poutré. “From small, all-volunteer organizations producing neighborhood events to internationally known theaters employing hundreds of artists, the arts and culture ecosystem in San Diego is thriving.”
With approval of the Mayor and City Council, the Commission annually supports the cultural sector through funding for local nonprofits in exchange for arts and culture services (e.g., performances, exhibits, parades, festivals and creative experiences) offered to the residents and visitors of San Diego. Each year, nonprofits apply through two competitive funding programs. The Organizational Support Program (OSP) provides general operating support to nonprofits whose mission is primarily arts and culture related and Creative Communities San Diego (CCSD) provides funding for specific projects, such as festivals and parades.
Funding for both programs comes from the local allocation of Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT), which is collected from visitors who stay overnight in hotels, motels and other similar accommodations.
“The Commission’s programs to cultivate the arts and culture sector continue to flourish, and we are thrilled to be able to support nonprofits during the coming fiscal year,” said Commission Interim Executive Director Christine E. Jones. “Our support provides expanded access to the arts, fosters economic growth in San Diego’s neighborhoods and enhances the work of artists and nonprofits.”
For fiscal year 2019, 97 nonprofits will receive funding from OSP and 50 from CCSD.
