Woman identified in Vista homicide

By Gina Yarbrough

Vista, CA–Authorities have identified the victim in last week’s Vista homicide as 60-year-old Mireya Pope.

On April 23, deputies responded to a call for a welfare check around 10 a.m. in the 700 block of North Citrus Avenue.

When deputies entered the home they found Pope deceased, showing signs of trauma. While conducting a safety sweep of the residence, deputies encountered an adult male barricaded inside a bedroom. The Sheriff’s SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called in to assist with the situation, the Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.

After negotiations, the man was safely taken into custody. He has been identified as 26-year-old Malcolm Pope, the son of the victim. He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives continue to investigate the case. While the motive remains unclear, investigators believe this was an isolated incident.
