Encinitas, CA–A two-vehicle collision at an intersection Friday night left one driver hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to calls of two vehicle collisions at 9:55 p.m. at Santa Fe Drive and Lake Drive.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 24-year-old male driving a 2003 Toyota Tacoma was heading eastbound on Santa Fe Drive and proceeded through the intersection of Lake Drive. At the same time, a 16-year-old female driving a 2016 Nissan Frontier heading westbound on Santa Fe Drive turned south onto Lake Drive in front of the Tacoma. The 16-year-old driver of the Frontier made the turn on a “Left Turn Yield” circular green light when the two vehicles collided. The Tacoma overturned and the 24-year-old driver was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. A 23-year-old passenger who was also in the Tacoma was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Frontier remained on scene and was uninjured following the collision.
The use of alcohol or drugs is not believed to be a factor in the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff’s Office says.
