Two people rescued from overturned sailboat at Oceanside Harbor

By Gina Yarbrough

Oceanside, CA–Two people were rescued from the water Saturday after their sailboat overturned near the Oceanside Harbor entrance, prompting a response from lifeguards and fire personnel, authorities said.

Oceanside Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the area after reports of a capsized sailboat lodged against the jetty. Upon arrival, lifeguards aboard a Marine Safety Unit vessel located both individuals in the water amid strong currents and hazardous surf conditions.

Rescuers brought the individuals aboard the lifeguard boat and returned them to the dock for medical evaluation.

One individual was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in stable condition, while the second was treated at the scene and did not require further medical care.

The rescue involved the Oceanside Marine Safety Unit, a 24-hour response team staffed by two lifeguards and a firefighter paramedic who handle emergencies on land and in the harbor. Officials credited the unit’s rapid and coordinated response with ensuring a successful outcome.

A commercial vessel assistance company later recovered the damaged sailboat.

Officials reminded the public that conditions near harbor entrances and jetties can change quickly, with strong currents, waves and confined waterways posing risks to boaters and swimmers.
