Camp Pendleton, CA–A vegetation fire burned more than 1,000 acres on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton on Monday afternoon, prompting mandatory evacuations and a large firefighting response.
The blaze, named the Pipeline Fire, was reported at about 4:13 p.m. near Stuart Mesa Road and Hammond Drive, according to a Cal Fire incident report.
According to Cal Fire, the fire was estimated at 1,064 acres. Officials said wind gusts pushed the flames to the southeast as Camp Pendleton firefighters, and other crews deployed both ground resources and aircraft in an effort to slow the fire’s spread.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for Camp Pendleton’s 32 and 33 areas, and officials closed the affected area to public access.
Paige Field House was established as the Evacuation Control Center for personnel affected by the orders.
At approximately 8:27 p.m., Camp Pendleton officials announced that the evacuation order for the 33 Area had been lifted. The mandatory evacuation order for the 32 Area remained in effect Monday night.
No injuries or structural damage were immediately reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
