Pedestrian fatally struck crossing road in Oceanside

By Gina Yarbrough

Oceanside, CA–A 57-year-old man was killed Friday night after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a roadway in Oceanside, authorities said.

Officers with the Oceanside Police Department responded to reports of a collision around 10 p.m. involving a pedestrian on Douglas Drive, just north of Rainier Way.

According to a preliminary investigation, a Honda Civic was traveling northbound in the number one lane on Douglas Drive with a green traffic signal when it struck the pedestrian. Investigators said the man was crossing eastbound outside of a marked crosswalk and north of the intersection at the time of the collision.

Officers arrived to find the pedestrian unconscious and suffering from severe head trauma. Police immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 28-year-old Oceanside resident, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Police said neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been factors in the crash. The driver was evaluated and later released pending further investigation.

The Oceanside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team has taken over the case.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Officer Gomez at (760) 435-4952.
