Oceanside, CA–Oceanside lifeguards rescued an adult male at the Oceanside Pier on Sunday afternoon after witnesses reported he had entered the ocean fully clothed and carrying a backpack.
According to authorities, lifeguards received a call at approximately 2:11 p.m. from witnesses who told responders the man jumped into the water from the north side of the pier and appeared to be in immediate distress.
A lifeguard sprinted to the end of the pier and entered the water, reaching the victim quickly and securing him with a rescue buoy to keep him afloat. At the same time, a lifeguard personal watercraft patrolling north of the pier was redirected to assist. Lifeguards transferred the man onto the watercraft and brought him to shore.
Oceanside Fire Department paramedics took over patient care on the beach, providing advanced life support before transporting the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for further evaluation. His condition remains unknown.
