San Diego, CA–A High Surf Advisory will be in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday through 11 p.m. Tuesday for the coastal areas of San Diego and Orange counties, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters expect large breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet, with occasional sets reaching 8 feet, primarily impacting south- and southwest-facing beaches.
The advisory warns that the elevated surf will create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and could cause localized beach erosion. A south swell of 4 to 5 feet from 180 to 200 degrees with a 13-second period is expected to produce the highest surf along south-facing shorelines.
While tides are forecast to remain at or below 5.5 feet, officials say the combination of high surf and elevated tides could result in minor tidal overflow and localized beach erosion in some areas.
The National Weather Service advises inexperienced swimmers to stay out of the water until conditions improve. Surf and swell are expected to gradually diminish by Wednesday.
