Escondido, CA–The Escondido Police Department has been awarded a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to expand its Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program, an initiative aimed at reducing injuries and promoting safer travel for all road users.
The initiative focuses on improving safety for pedestrians and bicyclists while reinforcing the responsibility of drivers to watch for vulnerable road users. Police Chief Ken Plunkett said the funding will allow the department to broaden its outreach and education efforts.
“We are excited to receive this grant, which will allow us to significantly expand our bicycle and pedestrian safety program,” Plunkett said. “By focusing on education, awareness, and promoting safe practices, we aim to reduce crashes and prevent injuries. Ultimately, we’re working toward building more walkable and bike-friendly neighborhoods where everyone can travel safely and confidently.”
The grant will support a series of community-focused activities, including participation in “Open Streets” events, youth bicycle training courses, helmet fittings and distribution, and the distribution of educational materials and safety gear such as bike lights and reflective bands. Officers will also conduct presentations in schools and community settings.
Office of Traffic Safety Director Stephanie Dougherty said programs like Escondido’s help strengthen statewide efforts to create safer streets for people on foot and on bicycles.
“Through safety programs and strong partnerships, we are working toward a future where everyone walking and biking in California can travel safely,” Dougherty said. “By supporting projects that encourage people to prioritize safety in their daily choices, we are creating a strong road safety culture together.”
The grant was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The program will operate through September 2026.
