San Marcos, CA–In a concerted effort to remove illegal firearms from the streets, deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station seized a privately manufactured weapon, commonly known as a ghost gun during a traffic stop in North County on Saturday evening.
The incident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. on West Mission Road near Comet Circle in San Marcos. During a routine traffic stop, Victor Lopez, a passenger in the vehicle, exited the car and fled the scene. Deputies pursued and detained Lopez, discovering he had a loaded ghost gun.
Ghost guns, unlike firearms produced by licensed manufacturers, lack serial numbers or other identifiable markings, making them difficult for law enforcement to trace. This absence of serial numbers poses significant challenges to tracking these weapons back to their owners or makers, complicating investigations and delaying crime-solving efforts.
Lopez, who has a prior felony conviction, was arrested on multiple firearms-related charges. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
