Camp Pendleton, CA–The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has released an internal report detailing an incident on Saturday in which metal shrapnel from explosive ordnance fired during a U.S. Marine Corps live-fire demonstration detonated prematurely over Interstate 5, damaging a patrol vehicle.
According to the report, the incident occurred as CHP officers were conducting a traffic break along I-5 near Camp Pendleton to support the military exercise. The freeway had been temporarily closed as a safety precaution during the live-fire event.
“This was an unusual and concerning situation,” said CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado. “It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway. As a Marine myself, I have tremendous respect for our military partners, but my foremost responsibility is ensuring the safety of the people of California and the officers who protect them.”
No injuries were reported, but CHP personnel immediately notified Marine Corps officials on site. The Marines subsequently halted further live ordnance firing over the freeway, and the area was swept for safety evaluation.
The CHP’s internal report recommends an after-action review to assess planning, communication, and coordination among federal, state, and local agencies involved. Officials said the goal is to strengthen safety protocols for future demonstrations or training exercises held near public roadways.
