Carlsbad, CA–As Independence Day approaches, Carlsbad officials are reminding residents that all fireworks remain illegal throughout San Diego County and that the city’s strengthened fireworks ordinance is now in effect.
Although fireworks have long been prohibited countywide, illegal fireworks continue to disrupt neighborhoods and pose significant public safety risks. City officials said Carlsbad has received approximately 130 fireworks-related calls for service over the past two years, with many occurring during peak holiday periods. The incidents increase the risk of fires and injuries while placing additional demands on police and fire personnel.
The updated ordinance, which took effect May 14, gives the Carlsbad Police Department, Carlsbad Fire Department and Code Enforcement expanded authority to work together in responding to fireworks-related complaints.
Under the ordinance, property owners and renters can be held responsible for illegal fireworks used on or near their property, even if the fireworks are set off by guests or others attending a gathering. Anyone who controls a property or organizes an event where illegal fireworks are used may be cited.
Violators face fines of $1,000 per violation, with penalties reaching up to $10,000 per day.
City officials said the ordinance is intended to improve public safety, reduce repeat violations and provide stronger enforcement tools to address illegal fireworks.
Residents are encouraged to celebrate Independence Day by attending professional fireworks displays and ensuring that illegal fireworks are not used on or near their property.

Emergencies involving fires, injuries or immediate threats should be reported by calling 911.
