Oceanside, CA–The Oceanside Police Department is investigating a fatal collision involving a bicyclist and an SUV near the Oceanside Harbor on Saturday night, according to authorities.
Officers were dispatched at approximately 10:42 p.m. to the area of 314 South Harbor Drive after receiving reports of a traffic crash. They located a 52-year-old man who had suffered major head trauma and an open femur fracture. He was unresponsive at the scene and was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for emergency treatment.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office later notified investigators that the man died from his injuries.
Police said the SUV driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. At this stage of the investigation, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors.
Due to the severity of the collision, the Oceanside Police Major Accident Investigation Team assumed control of the case. Harbor Drive was temporarily closed during the on-scene investigation and later reopened.
