Chula Vista, CA–Chula Vista police arrested a 52-year-old man Wednesday morning for an unprovoked attack and attempted murder of a 17-year-old girl at a bus stop in Chula Vista.
San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officers were able to locate and detain the suspect, identified as Antwan Baker, by surveillance video. He was located at 12th Street and Imperial Avenue in San Diego.
Baker was booked into San Diego County Jail on the charge of attempted murder. The victim was treated at the hospital and is at home recovering with her family, Sergeant Anthony Molina, Public Information Officer stated in a release.
Chula Vista police said the attack occurred in clear view of a busy intersection during broad daylight. They are seeking witnesses and information related to their investigation.
On Tuesday, around 8:08 a.m., the Chula Vista Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a female saying her throat had been cut by a stranger who fled on foot in the 500 block of Broadway.
Officers responded to the scene and located the victim at the bus stop near the southwest corner of the intersection at Broadway and H Street in Chula Vista. She had significant cuts to her neck. Officers rendered aid until medics arrived.
The victim was conscious and gave officers a statement. While she was sitting at the bus stop, an unknown man came up to her from behind and grabbed her head. He reached around her neck and cut her throat with a sharp object. The man walked away without saying a word.
Officers began a comprehensive search of the area and surrounding neighborhood. They broadcast an alert to surrounding law enforcement and began working with nearby businesses and community partners in an effort to gather evidence and apprehend the suspect. Detectives also canvassed nearby businesses in hopes of finding video footage. San Diego Metropolitan Transit System Officers assisted by checking their security cameras and found a video of the suspect fleeing the area.
