San Diego, CA–A new state-of-the-art fire station will open in the East County to reduce response times in the surrounding communities, officials said.

The East Otay Mesa Fire Station 38 will respond to medical calls to construction and warehouse workers, traffic accidents, incarcerated individuals, and any calls related to the border crossing.

The community surrounding the fire station includes industrial and commercial businesses, several correctional facilities, and the Otay Mountain open space to the east.

“This is a big win for fire protection, critical incident response, and emergency medical services,” said San Diego Association of Governments Chairwoman Nora Vargas, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “The new East Otay Mesa Fire Station is essential for the economic growth of this area.”

During the construction of the new station, Cal Fire crews and apparatus were temporarily housed at the city of San Diego’s Brown Field Fire Station.

The station has 12 bedrooms for fire crews, a full kitchen, a large gym, a living area, a ladder truck, a fire engine, and two ambulances.

The County Department of General Services designed the station to be Zero Net Energy with roof solar panels. It also will achieve LEED Gold certification.

The East Otay Mesa Fire Station is the county’s first building to achieve a 30% Embodied Carbon Reduction goal.
