Oceanside, CA–One driver is dead and two other people were injured Friday in a multiple vehicle collision in Oceanside, authorities said.
Oceanside police responded to a 7:40 p.m. report of the collision in the 4300 block of Mesa Drive.
Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male inside a Dodge Charger and two seriously injured people lying outside of a Mini Cooper. Paramedics arrived on the scene and pronounced the 27-year-old driver of the Dodge Charger deceased. The two victims in the Mini Cooper were taken by air ambulance to a local hospital.
Investigators believe the Dodge Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Mesa Drive, possibly racing a silver vehicle. The Dodge lost control and spun into oncoming eastbound traffic and struck the Mini Cooper. The Dodge then rolled an unknown number of times and came to rest against a light pole approximately 350 feet down the road from the original collision in the eastbound lanes. The other vehicle involved left the scene westbound on Mesa Dr. Speed was a factor in the collision. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs was a factor.
The investigation is ongoing.
