VISTA–The San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office completed their autopsy report of an inmate found dead in his cell May 17 at the Vista Detention Facility. The cause of death was suicide.

Sheriff’s deputies at the Vista Detention Facility were conducting a security check in one of the housing areas when they discovered an inmate, 33-year-old Joseph Morton, hanging and unresponsive in his cell.

Deputies immediately entered the cell to render aid. Deputies and medical staff performed lifesaving measures until relieved by paramedics. Despite their efforts, Morton was pronounced dead at the scene. He was alone in his secure cell and no evidence of foul play was discovered.

Morton was booked into custody on May 11 by Sheriff’s deputies for robbery, felony child cruelty, identity theft, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property.
