Poway, CA–A man arrested on suspicion of domestic violence early Sunday morning temporarily escaped from deputies’ custody while handcuffed, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies responded to a report at 1:15 a.m. of domestic violence in the 16000 block of Dove Canyon Road.

According to deputies, the victim reported her 19-year-old ex-boyfriend, Alfonso Ramirez, assaulted her. Deputies contacted and arrested Ramirez for spousal abuse. As deputies were escorting Ramirez to a patrol vehicle he pulled away from the deputy and fled on foot while handcuffed, Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Landon Kuhn stated in a news release.

Additional patrol units were called to the area to search for Ramirez. He was located and taken back into custody a short time later.

Ramirez was charged with a restraining order violation, spousal abuse, and escaping lawful police custody.
