Del Mar, CA–Sheriff’s detectives are investigating a deadly two-alarm fire that killed a man at his home Friday afternoon in Del Mar, authorities said.

The fire was first reported just before 2 p.m. in the 1500 block of Luneta Drive.

A passerby called 9-1-1 after hearing a smoke detector going off, and heavy smoke coming from a house. Deputies and fire crews from Del Mar and Solana Beach Fire Departments responded to the scene.

A deputy initially went through the back door to search the house for victims but was pushed back by heavy smoke. Firefighters continued the search of the house and found a man in a bedroom. He was rushed to a hospital, but he did not survive his burn injuries, Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Anthony Portillo said.

The fire was confined to the bedroom, fire officials said.

A relative visiting from out of town was not injured in the blaze. A dog at the home was not hurt and is with the relative. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the individual.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the body, as well as determine the cause and manner of death once the family has been notified.
