San Diego, CA–A 44-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted assault on a person, resisting arrest, and threatening police officers by brandishing a knife at an apartment complex Thursday in San Diego, authorities said.

Maurice Littlejohn was booked into the San Diego Central Jail for assault with an attempt to commit a felony, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and using violence to resist arrest.

San Diego police officers responded to a radio call at around 7:30 p.m. of a sexual assault in progress in an apartment in the 300 block of South Meadowbrook Drive in Bay Terraces in San Diego.

When officers arrived on the scene, they contacted Littlejohn near the apartment of the initial radio call. Littlejohn threatened the officers with a cane and then a knife. One of the officers deployed a taser with no effect. Littlejohn fled on foot through the complex with the officers in pursuit. As Littlejohn was running, he reached into his waistband and pulled out an object believed to be a firearm. At that point, one officer fired two to three rounds from his service weapon at the Littlejohn. He was not struck by the rounds. Littlejohn continued to run. Officers pursued Littlejohn and apprehended him at the intersection of South Meadowbrook Drive and Brookhaven Road.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit responded, and has assumed responsibility for the officer-involved shooting investigation.

San Diego Police Department detectives responded to investigate the sexual assault.

No officers were injured during the incident.
