San Diego, CA–Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the George Bailey Detention Facility Wednesday in San Diego, officials said.
Deputies found two inmates just before 8 a.m. unresponsive in their cell during a security check. One of them was revived with the use of Naloxone and transported to a local hospital. Despite life-saving measures administered to the other inmate, identified as 25-year-old Omar Ornelas, by deputies, medical staff, and paramedics, he did not survive.
On November 27, 2018, Ornelas of San Marcos was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility by San Diego County Probation Department for a probation violation. The probation violation was for vandalism less than $400 to commit a crime for the benefit of a gang.
On December 18, 2018, Oceanside Police Department filed additional charges against Ornelas including murder, discharge of a firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and committing a crime for the benefit of a gang. Ornelas was transferred to the George Bailey Detention Facility on December 27, 2021.
The Homicide Unit responded to investigate the incident. As a matter of practice, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit investigates all deaths of persons in custody at the time of their passing. The cause and manner of death are still under investigation. The Medical Examiner’s Office will schedule an autopsy today.
The Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board was notified of the death and responded to the George Bailey Detention Facility.
