San Diego, CA–Feeding San Diego is launching a new site for its large-scale food distributions in the South Bay.

The Together Tour is a series of distributions aimed at making access to fresh, nutritious food convenient and consistent. The organization began hosting emergency food distributions with partners at the onset of the pandemic, and then last month launched large-scale distributions due to demonstrated need for food assistance in specific regions of San Diego county where the meal gap is most acute.

“Even as our county makes strides in combatting the pandemic and reopening, we will continue to host large-scale distributions to give widespread access to food to large numbers of residents of San Diego County,” said Dan Shea, CEO of Feeding San Diego. “Economists predict a five-year recovery horizon for some of the hardest-hit industries. Feeding San Diego is committed to being a part of that recovery and providing food for anyone in need of assistance while they get back on their feet.”

The large-scale distributions can serve up to 1,400 people and are contactless. Volunteers place approximately 50 pounds of food in the trunk of attendees’ cars as they drive through, making large parking lots the ideal place to hold these events. Since February, the organization has held eight of these types of distributions throughout the county and given food to over 20,000 people. The Together Tour gets underway March 30 at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista from 1 to 3 p.m.

According to data from San Diego Hunger Coalition, the South Bay has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the county. Feeding San Diego will continue to seek out the cities most impacted to provide assistance. That South Bay date is followed by two distributions at the Pechanga Arena on April 7 and May 13. As more dates are confirmed they will be announced on the Together Tour webpage and on Feeding San Diego’s social media channels. Those in need of food are encouraged to register at the site and check back regularly to see if more dates have been added.
