SAN DIEGO–A New Year’s Day multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 805 sent one driver to the hospital with major injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.
Shortly after 2 p.m., CHP Dispatch began receiving calls of a multi-vehicle collision on I-805 northbound, just south of I-5 merge.
CHP units responded to find a blue Nissan 350Z with extensive damage blocking the number 1 and 2 lane, and three additional vehicles on the right shoulder and number 5 lane.
According to the CHP, the blue Nissan 350Z was traveling on I-805 northbound approaching I-5 and for unknown reason the Nissan became disabled in the number 1 lane. The driver exited the Nissan and was standing outside the vehicle. A silver Mercedes Benz was traveling at freeway speed and collided with the stopped Nissan and the driver. The driver of the Nissan sustained major injuries as a result of being struck by the Mercedes. A Honda Accord swerved to miss the Nissan 350Z but struck it as well. There was a Jeep Cherokee also involved which appears to have been struck by debris. The driver of the Nissan was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital.
Authorities said DUI or street racing do not appear to be a factor in the collision.
