SAN MARCOS–A man in a stolen vehicle was arrested Sunday after he led authorities on a brief pursuit in the north county, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reports.
The incident began at 1:10 p.m. when the Carlsbad Police Department broadcasted information of an occupied stolen vehicle, last seen in the area of Palomar Airport Road, traveling eastbound toward San Marcos. Sheriff’s deputies began searching the area and located the stolen vehicle, unoccupied in the parking lot of the Target store, located at 3150 Business Park Drive in Vista, said San Diego County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Charles Morreale.
Deputies set up surveillance on the vehicle, while requesting additional resources, including ASTREA and an available canine unit. After a few minutes the suspect returned to the vehicle and units moved in to attempt to contact him.
The suspect, later identified as a 23-year-old Dylan Kidd, was able to start the vehicle and a 4 to 5 minute vehicle pursuit ensued. Kidd drove out of the parking lot and onto the adjacent surface streets. Kidd ended up, driving southbound on White Sands Drive, which dead-ended, just south of Coast Avenue. He then exited the vehicle and fled into the adjacent canyon area. When he exited the vehicle, he failed to put the vehicle in park and it rolled into the garage door of a residence in the 1200 block of White Sands Drive, causing minor damage. He continued to flee, on foot, for approximately 6 minutes, while ASTREA gave directions to responding deputies as to Kidd’s location in the canyon area.
Kidd eventually gave up and he was taken into custody without further incident. He was later transported and booked into Vista Detention Facility. He is charged with felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of stolen vehicle, shoplifting, and hit and run.
