SAN DIEGO–The County of San Diego, Department of Environmental Health has issued a water contact closure for the Silver Strand State Beach shoreline as a result of a diesel fuel spill of unknown volume and origin.

Observations conducted by the environmental health agency staff from the shoreline and U.S. Coast Guard from the air have identified odors and oil sheen consistent with a diesel fuel spill that may impact Silver Strand State Beach.

Signs warning of contaminated water will remain in place until the ocean water is safe for recreational use.  Department of Environmental Health and Coast Guard staff will continue to monitor conditions to determine when the beach will be reopened for water contact.
