San Diego, CA–A woman contacted the police on Sunday after her ex-boyfriend appeared at her apartment, threatened to shoot her, and abducted their daughter before fleeing the scene, authorities said.
The San Diego Police Department responded to a call from a woman in the 400 block of 47th Street. She reported that her ex-boyfriend was at her front door, threatening to shoot through it if she didn’t let him in. Fearing for her safety, she allowed him to enter. Once inside, he pointed a gun at her and threatened to shoot. He then took their 11-month-old daughter and left the apartment.
Officers arrived on the scene as the man walked out of the apartment. When he saw the officers, he fled on foot. He ran through the apartment complex, through the trolley tracks, across the trolley station parking lot, and into an apartment complex in the 200 block of 47th Street.
Officers were checking the interior of the apartment complex when an officer located the suspect hiding inside a bush, prompting an officer-involved shooting. The man was struck at least one time. They immediately began life-saving measures until relieved by paramedics. The man was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition. His name is being withheld at this time. Officers later learned the man was holding his daughter during the officer-involved shooting. The child was unharmed and was returned to her family.
The man was arrested for kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner, and willful cruelty to a child with the potential for great bodily injury or death.
The San Diego Police Department has employed the officer involved in the shooting for one and a half years. They are currently assigned as a patrol officer from the Southeastern Division.
Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation. At this stage of the inquiry, the motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation.
When the Sheriff’s Department completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the officer’s discharge of his firearm.
