San Diego, CA–A deadly train collision killed a 17-year-old bicyclist in Sorrento Valley Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Sorrento Valley Road and Sorrento Valley Boulevard at 12:30 p.m.
The San Diego Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit, responsible for investigating incidents along the routes of the North County Transit District used by Amtrak, has taken over the investigation at the request of the San Diego Police Department.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, three boys on bicycles were stopped at the crossing arms to allow a northbound train to pass. After the northbound train cleared the tracks, the teen began crossing, unaware of an approaching southbound train. The train struck the boy, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The other two bicyclists were not harmed.
In adherence to policy, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has not released the identity of the underage victim.
The Medical Examiner’s Office also responded to the scene. They will continue the investigation, including confirming the teen’s identity and determining the exact cause and manner of death once the family has been notified.
Authorities urge all pedestrians and cyclists to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings near train tracks.
