Oceanside, CA–A lithium battery fire caused damage to a home in Oceanside early Saturday morning, fire officials reported.
The Oceanside Fire Department, with assistance from the Vista Fire Department, responded to the residential structure fire at 4549 Quailridge Drive after North County Dispatch JPA received a 9-1-1 call from a resident reporting a fire in their bedroom around 12:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters evacuated the residents and deployed a fire hose to the home. The blaze was contained to the bedroom and quickly extinguished. Additional crews inspected the adjoining house to ensure no fire extension and shut off the gas and electricity for safety.
Due to the hazards associated with the smoke produced by the fire, San Diego Fire and Rescue’s Hazardous Material team was consulted.
“We are thankful to report that no injuries occurred and no residents were displaced. Lithium-ion battery fires release toxic fumes that pose significant health risks. The Oceanside Fire Department encourages residents to educate themselves on lithium-ion battery safety and prevention measures. This includes always following the manufacturer’s guidelines for charging, using, and storing lithium batteries. If a battery catches fire, evacuate the area and call 9-1-1 immediately,” the Oceanside Fire Department stated in a news release.
The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.
