Sheriff’s Office release cause of death for woman at Las Colinas

By Gina Yarbrough

San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday released the cause and manner of death of a 53-year-old woman who died while in custody at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee.

According to the Medical Examiner’s Office, an autopsy determined that Linda Bagby died from complications of dilated cardiomyopathy. Contributing conditions included congestive mild hepatomegaly and splenomegaly, a history of chronic alcoholism, and morbid obesity. Her death was classified as natural.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies were serving dinner at about 4:25 p.m. on June 13 when they found Bagby unresponsive in her cell. Deputies called 911, requested medical staff, and began CPR. Paramedics and the Santee Fire Department continued lifesaving measures, but Bagby was pronounced dead at the facility at approximately 4:35 p.m.

Bagby, of El Cajon, had been in custody since Jan. 3 and was facing several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and felony vandalism.

In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office offered condolences to Bagby’s family, noting that a Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer will assist them.

The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board was notified of the death. Per protocol, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and is investigating the incident.
