Poway, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday in Poway, authorities said.
The checkpoint is scheduled to operate from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the city, the Poway Sheriff’s Station stated in a release.
Officials said DUI checkpoints are strategically placed based on collision data and the frequency of impaired driving arrests. During the operation, deputies will screen drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and verify proper licensing.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, particularly those that carry warnings about operating vehicles or machinery, can affect a driver’s ability. Marijuana use–especially when combined with alcohol or other substances–may also lead to impairment and a DUI arrest.
Authorities urged the public to plan ahead and avoid driving under the influence by using a designated sober driver, ride-share service, taxi, or public transportation. Residents are also encouraged to intervene if they see someone attempting to drive while impaired and to report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911.
For those hosting gatherings, officials recommend offering nonalcoholic beverage options and ensuring guests have safe transportation home.
The Sheriff’s Office noted that a DUI arrest can carry significant financial consequences, with costs exceeding $13,500 when factoring in fines, fees, classes, license suspension, and other penalties, in addition to the possibility of jail time.
Funding for the checkpoint is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
