CARLSBAD–The California Office of Traffic Safety has awarded the Carlsbad Police Department a $108,000 grant.
The focus of the grant is roadway safety and it will assist the police department in its efforts to reduce deaths and injuries on the Carlsbad roadways.
“The mission of the Police Department’s traffic unit is to ensure the safety of all who travel Carlsbad’s roadways,” stated Traffic Lieutenant Christie Calderwood. “We are grateful for this grant as it provides funding for education and enhanced safety programs that will further this mission.”
The one-year grant is for the 2021 federal fiscal year, which runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2021.
The grant will fund a variety of traffic safety programs including: Alcohol and drug-impaired driving prevention, California’s hands-free cell phone law education, bicyclists and pedestrian safety, collision prevention focused on speed, failure to yield, failure to stop and improper turning/lane changes, distracted driving, DUI, speed, bicycle and pedestrian safety community education/presentations, collaborative traffic safety priorities with neighboring agencies, officer training and certifications for roadway safety testing (sobriety, impaired driving and drug recognition).
“Through education that leads to behavioral changes, we hope to create an environment that is safe and equitable for all roadway users in our community,” said Calderwood.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
