SAN DIEGO–Sailors aboard amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) were injured when an explosion and fire rocked the ship Sunday morning, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The explosion was reported at 8:51 a.m. at the ship’s homeport on 32nd Street in San Diego. Federal and local fire crews responded to the scene of a three-alarm fire on the amphibious assault ship.

All Sailors on board the ship are accounted for, according to Navy officials. About 11 Sailors were injured in the fire. They were transported to local hospitals for treatment to their injuries.

The cause of the explosion and fire is not known.
