OCEANSIDE–Oceanside Mayor Peter Weiss joined mayors across the country in the 2020 Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation this month.
The August 1-31 competition aims to ignite cities across the nation in promoting drought resiliency, watershed protection, and overall environmental stewardship. A month-long campaign, the Mayor’s Challenge is a call to action for leaders to inspire their residents to pledge to use resources wisely and form smart habits that will help them conserve water and energy on a daily basis. In the wake of the current pandemic, this year’s campaign provides residents with additional opportunities to get involved safely from home.
Mayor Weiss is asking all Oceanside residents to take the water pledge by August 31 to support Oceanside in the Challenge. Residents may visit www.mywaterpledge.com to pledge online, or email or mail in the hard copy sent with their August water bill. Pledges must be received by August 31. If Oceanside receives more pledges than similarly-sized cities, residents who took the pledge have the chance to win hundreds of prizes, such as money toward their home utility payments, irrigation equipment and home improvement shopping sprees.
New this year, residents may also participate in the Challenge by completing hands-on projects or actions in their own backyard or neighborhood. The hands-on projects can be done as an individual, with family members, or set up as a virtual group activity inviting friends to do the same activity in their own backyards. A student edition of the Challenge offers activities and curriculum for students to do at home as well, and students who pledge online can win prizes for their classroom.

Oceanside residents take pride in using this precious resource wisely and each person’s efforts go a long way in supporting the City’s, and region’s, long-term water supply reliability,” said Mayor Weiss. In last year’s Mayor’s challenge, Oceanside placed 3rd in the nation. This year, help Oceanside win first place!
