SAN DIEGO–San Diego Pride has revealed their new theme, “Resilient,” for this year’s Pride event this summer.
San Diego Pride week is set to take place on July 10 to Sunday, July 18. Keeping with the theme, San Diego Pride’s 2021 year-round programs, events, education, and messages will focus on the ways in which the LGBTQ community and movement can restore, rebuild, redeem, and revive one another in pursuit of full equality.
“Our brilliantly diverse community has a history of resilience; we have built innovative pathways to overcome discriminatory laws, hate, violence, and issues of public health,” said San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Lopez. “We must continue to lift up that legacy if we are to foster a future free of prejudice and bias for all LGBTQ people locally, nationally, and globally. We must remain resilient.”
As a nonprofit, the proceeds from the annual Pride events underwrite the costs of producing the large scale events as well as year-round programming and annual community grants. Absent that revenue in 2020, Pride had to reduce their community grant program but continued year-round programming in virtual spaces reaching over 730,000 people.
The San Diego Pride board, staff, and volunteer leadership team have been working diligently on multiple contingencies for interactive virtual gatherings, a full in-person event, and a mid-road of both live streaming content with scaled back in-person events.
As the year unfolds, San Diego Pride will continue communications with local and state public health officials in order to adjust the annual Pride celebrations in accordance with public health guidance for the protection of their community’s health and safety.
