San Diego, CA–The Carlsbad-based Rubio’s Coastal Grill Friday abruptly shuttered 48 underperforming locations in California, citing ‘rising costs’ in the state.
A spokesperson for Rubio’s stated that 35 stores have closed, including 13 in San Diego County. Approximately 86 stores are still operating in California, Arizona, and Nevada.
“Making the decision to close a store is never an easy one,” the spokesman stated in a release. “While painful, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic long-term plan to position Rubio’s for success for years to come.”

Rubio’s Home of the Original Fish Taco brand was credited with the fish taco phenomenon in the U.S. The restaurant first opened in 1983 in the San Diego neighborhood of Mission Bay. Its menu consists of responsibly sourced seafood, all-natural chicken, raised without antibiotics, all-natural USDA Choice steak, and other items.
