San Diego, CA–An armed man was fatally shot by San Diego police officers following a brief vehicle pursuit and standoff Friday night in San Diego, authorities said.

San Diego Police officers conducted a traffic stop around 11:30 p.m. at the 1800 block of Logan Avenue.

Officers contacted the 37-year-old male driver. During the traffic stop the driver suddenly sped away in the vehicle heading east on Logan Ave. A short pursuit ensued for about two blocks. The vehicle came to a stop around the 2000 block of Logan Ave. The man exited the driver’s side of the vehicle with a handgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

As the man fell to the ground his handgun dropped from his body. Officers ordered the man to move away from the handgun, but he did not comply. A police K9 was used to pull the man away from the firearm. Officers provided medical aid to the man until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts from hospital staff, the man died of his injuries and was pronounced dead, Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Chris Steffen said in a news release.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the officer-involved shooting investigation. No officers were injured.

The suspect has been identified, but his identity is not being released pending family notifications.

The Sheriff’s Department said there is body-worn camera footage of the incident.
