Carlsbad, CA–A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday after he struck a minivan at an intersection near the Interstate 5 freeway in Carlsbad, authorities said.

The Carlsbad Police Department responded to a call around 4:45 p.m. of a vehicle collision at the intersection of Cannon Road at the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp.

On arrival, officers found that a Kawasaki motorcycle had collided with a Toyota minivan. The motorcyclist, a 67-year-old man, was ejected and injured in the roadway. He was treated by fire department personnel at the scene and transported to a local trauma center. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Cannon Road, and entered the intersection against a red light, colliding into the minivan that was exiting the northbound I-5 off-ramp, Carlsbad police said.

The driver of the minivan, a 72-year-old woman, remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators. The identity of the motorcyclist is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, and it is not believed drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The intersection of Cannon Road and the northbound I-5 off-ramp was closed for several hours so investigators can process the scene of the collision.

The Carlsbad Police Department is seeking additional witnesses to the collision, and requests they contact Accident Investigator Officer Adam Bentley with any information.
