Oceanside, CA–The California Surf Museum announced the student award winners of its second annual A.R. Gurrey, Jr. Surf Photography Competition.
Named in honor of A.R. Gurrey, Jr., the first known photographer of surfers, this competition celebrates the rich history of surf photography as immortalized in the museum’s historic 1914 booklet, The Surf Riders of Hawaii.
This year’s competition attracted submissions from students across San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles counties. Entries were evaluated by a panel of experts based on their skill and ability to capture the essence of the surfing experience. The competition was divided into six categories: Surf Action from the Land; Surf Action from the Water; Seascapes/Lineups; Portraits of Surfers; Boards, Equipment, and Surf Cars; and Environmental Awareness and Ocean Activism.

The awards were presented on May 21 at a special event held at the California Surf Museum in Oceanside, attended by students, school officials, and families.
The prestigious Best in Show award among this year’s 256 submissions was awarded to Jesus Montano Perez, an 11th grader from Oceanside High School, for his remarkable entry in the “Portraits of Surfers” category.
All winners were honored with a custom trophy, a Certificate of Achievement, an issue of The Surfer’s Journal, and an archival issue of Longboard Magazine. The Best in Show winner received a custom trophy crafted by Rick Cole, a DJI camera drone, and a $100 gift card from George’s Camera in San Diego. First-place winners in each category received a GoPro camera and a $50 gift card from George’s Camera, while second-place winners were awarded a $25 gift card from George’s Camera.
