Sacramento, CA–Homicide detectives are investigating a mass shooting that killed six people and injured twelve others early Sunday morning in downtown Sacramento.
Sacramento police responded around 2 a.m. to the sounds of shots fired in the area of 10th Street and K Street.
Upon arrival, officers located a large group of individuals as well as multiple gunshot victims. Officers began life-saving measures for multiple victims on the scene. Despite these efforts, six were pronounced dead at the scene. The twelve other victims with varying degrees of injuries were located in the area.
“The scale of violence that just happened in our city is unprecedented during my 27 years here at the Sacramento Police Department. We are shocked and heartbroken by this tragedy,” Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said at a news conference.
Lester said the department will use its available resources to search for the suspects responsible for the shooting, and “to secure justice for the victims and their families.”
During the investigation, officers located one firearm at the scene. No further information was released on the weapon.
A video of the alleged shooting has been circulating around social media, according to Sacramento police.
“We are aware of a social media video that appears to show an altercation that preceded the shooting. We are currently working to determine what, if any, relation these events have to the shooting,” authorities said in a press release. “In the early stages of the investigation, all information remains preliminary and is subject to change. As we progress throughout the coming days, we will be releasing additional information as it becomes available.”
The Sacramento Police Department is looking for any witnesses with information regarding the investigation.
