CA secures federal assistance to support response to the Airport Fire

By SDCN Editor

Sacramento, CA–Governor Gavin Newsom Wednesday announced that California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help ensure the availability of vital resources to Riverside County to assist with the costs of suppressing the Airport Fire.

The Airport Fire, which began Monday afternoon in Trabuco Canyon, has grown to 19,028 acres in unincorporated areas of Orange and Riverside counties, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people, and threatening more than 10,000 structures.

“California is continuing to see extreme fire behavior across multiple locations in Southern California, where hot, dry weather has led to rapid fire growth. We are thankful for federal support from the Biden-Harris Administration to support firefighters as they work to suppress these fires and keep people safe,” Governor Newsom stated in a news release.

The grant, which is provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund on a cost-share basis, will allow local, state, and tribal agencies responding to the fire to apply for 75 percent reimbursement of their eligible fire suppression costs.

Earlier this wildfire season, California secured Fire Management Assistance Grants for the Borel, Park, Thompson, French, Hawarden, Boyles, Line, and Bridge fires.
