SAN DIEGO –   County Supervisor Greg Cox has won a planning advocate award for his leadership efforts to create active transportation and open space projects.

Cox won the “Planning Advocate Award” from the San Diego Section of the American Planning Association. The award was presented at the Association’s annual awards event at the San Diego Central Library in downtown San Diego Wednesday night.

The award is given to an appointed or elected official who has advanced or promoted the cause of planning in the public arena.

Supervisor Cox was nominated for his dynamic support of a number of parks projects, including the Bayshore Bikeway, a 24-mile bicycle pathway around San Diego Bay; efforts to enhance more than 2,000 acres of parks in the Otay Valley, Sweetwater Valley and Tijuana River Valley regional parks and establish a vast network of trails; and his leadership on creating the San Diego segment of the California Coastal Trail, a 1,200-mile trail from the Mexican border to Oregon.

“I’m honored to receive this award, but the real reward is in giving the families of San Diego parks and open spaces that they can enjoy,” said Supervisor Cox.

With his award from the San Diego Section, Supervisor Cox is now eligible for entry in the statewide awards program through the California Chapter of the American Planning Association.
