OCEANSIDE–A northbound Amtrak train fatally struck a pedestrian Sunday near a Harbor Drive bridge in Oceanside, authorities said.
Deputies from the San Diego Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to the 10:30 a.m. collision on the railroad tracks that run below the Harbor Drive bridge near the intersection of Harbor Drive and Carmelo Drive.
Prior to the collision, a northbound Amtrak train had left the Oceanside Transit Center and was traveling at approximately 55 miles per hour as it approached the Harbor Drive bridge. As the train approached the bridge, the engineer saw an unknown person lying face down between the rails of the railroad tracks. The engineer sounded the train’s horn and activated emergency braking. The individual made no attempt to get off the tracks and the train was unable to stop before colliding with the individual. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities are investigating the incident.
