ENCINITAS–A male pedestrian crossing an Encinitas road Tuesday evening was struck by an oncoming vehicle, authorities say.

Just after 7:30 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian near the intersection of North El Camino Real and Encinitas Boulevard in Encinitas.

A 61-year-old male pedestrian was walking westbound, crossing North El Camino Real, when he was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound in the number one lane of North El Camino Real. The pedestrian was not crossing the street in the marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.

The pedestrian sustained serious injury, and was transported by AMR paramedic ambulance to the hospital. He later succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased.

The identity of the pedestrian and cause of death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.
