Oceanside, CA–The Oceanside Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on March 16 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at an undisclosed location within Oceanside city limits. The checkpoint aims to enhance road safety by identifying and removing impaired drivers.
Checkpoint sites are carefully selected based on data indicating areas with higher rates of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary goal is clear: boost public safety by keeping dangerous drivers off the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Sgt. Clint Bussey. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
The department stresses that impaired driving goes beyond alcohol. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can dangerously affect driving abilities. Additionally, while medicinal and recreational marijuana use is legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal and subject to severe penalties.
First-time DUI offenders face harsh consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, which can have lasting impacts on their personal and professional lives.
This operation is made possible through funding from the California Highway Patrol’s Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program, underscoring the state’s commitment to combating impaired driving and promoting safer roadways.
