Escondido, CA–The Escondido Police Department issued 58 citations for a variety of violations made by drivers and bicyclists during a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation on June 8.
Fifty-three drivers were cited for violations that could put bicyclists and pedestrians at risk, including speeding, violation of signs and signals and unsafe turns. Five bicyclists also received citations.
The operation took place citywide between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. In total, 58 people were contacted. Three individuals were arrested for drug and weapons violations, and a warrant for driving on a suspended license.
“Safety is a shared responsibility, with drivers holding the greatest responsibility to keep other road users safe,” Police Chief Ken Plunkett said. “We hope this operation serves as a reminder to everyone to practice due care and to look out for one another.”
The Escondido Police Department will be holding another bicycle and pedestrian safety operation on July 20.
Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
