Carlsbad, CA–A woman was fatally shot Friday night in the parking lot of a Carlsbad apartment complex, authorities said.
Carlsbad Police officers were dispatched at about 9:53 p.m. to the 2300 block of Rising Glen Way following reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive adult female suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite paramedics’ efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the victim’s vehicle was taken during the incident. Using License Plate Reader technology, authorities later tracked the car to Orange County. Newport Beach Police officers located the vehicle, and after a brief pursuit, the driver—identified as a person of interest in the Carlsbad homicide—was involved in an officer-involved shooting.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation into the Newport Beach incident.
Carlsbad Police said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
